94 Hikes in the Canadian Rockies: Yoho, Jasper, Mt. Robson and Willmore Parks
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (April, 1983)
Authors: Dee Urbick and Vicky Spring
Average review score:

This is a must have hiking guide of these parks.
This is a comprehisive trail guide to the best areas in the parks. Along with its companion "95 Hikes in the Canadian Rockies: Banff, Kootenay and Assiniboine Parks" you have the whole area covered. Each trail description is accompanied by a black & white photo, hand drawn map and important trail statistics, eg, distance, elevation gain, etc. Written for hikers by hikers. Without this book I feel lost in the Rockies no matter how many other fancier guidebooks I have with me. It is a shame that these books have gone out of print.

Blue Guide Poland

Authors: Jasper Tilbury and Pawel Turnau

First Class Grand Tour
I really found this new book in the Blue Guide series to be of great value. It covers many of the travel plans I intend to make and places I want to visit. It covers the people, the land and the artistic treasures of this vastly misunderstood country. There are effective itineraries that explore beautiful landscapes, scenic and rustic towns, and the major cities, including Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk and Wroclaw. This guide provides an insider's view of Poland, from its music, myths, folklore, to its art, architecture, cinema, literature, food, drink and colorful history. This is a land of a proud and great people. I have to thank my co-workers for this one.

Coconuts: Production, Processing, Products
Published in Textbook Binding by Avi Pub Co (June, 1979)
Author: Jasper Guy Woodroff
Average review score:

Extensive and relevant coconut processing information
This book has a great value, because it explains in a very extensive manner all the main uses of the coconut. Besides it gives a really good description of the machinery needed for coconut processing in case of wanting to start a business based in a coconut product. The references given in this book are really good. The disadvantage, is that it was edited in the 70's, but still gives really relevant information. This book helped me a lot while doing research for a business project about a coconut product.

Consciousness: At the Frontiers of Neuroscience (Advances in Neurology, V. 77)
Published in Hardcover by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Publishers (August, 1998)
Authors: Herbert H. Jasper, Universite De Montreal Centre De Recherche En Sciences Neurologiques I, and Laurent Descarries
Average review score:

Great
This is an amazing collection, as most collections on the science of consciousness are, for the exitement the topic arises.
It is at times a bit too technical, like in E. Jones or Steriade's chapters on thalamic neurobiology. Other chapter are too abstract or "dated" (or is it classical?). But there are also jewels, like the clearest introduction to Edelman and Tononis, Crick and Kotchs, and Jeffrey Grays theories of consicousness. This last chapter was specially interesting, as Grays model of the contents of consicousness was used to study schitzofrenia. Gazzaniga and his interpreter seem more plausible solutions to some major troubles in consicousness theorizing every time I read him. Chapters on language and development are also there and great, as well as one on vision, by no other than H.Hubel, along with T. Weasel, one of the most influential neuroscientists of vision. Philosophical introductions by Patricia Churchland and D. Chalmers and other unmentioned contributions were also quite good.
The cream is however, found on the comment sessions after each paper and the general session at the end of the book. Debates at that level are seldom recorded, and are extremely interesting and though-provoking.
A must-have for serious researchers and thinkers on consciousness.

Consuming Passions: Feminist Approaches to Weight Preoccupation and Eating Disorders
Published in Paperback by Second Story Press (August, 1993)
Authors: Catrina Brown and Karin Jasper
Average review score:

The BEST book I've read on eating disorders!
After years of looking for feminist perspectives on eating disorders I came across this amazing book. What makes this book particularly unique is that it is edited, and contains the views of many different feminists and feminist therapists. Not only was the theory the most useful I have read, but this book also contains many helpful ideas for how feminists (and feminists working in the mental health field in particular) can best help their clients who are struggling with eating disorder and body image issues. Anyone who works with eating disordered clients cannot pass this book up--it is WELL woth the money!

A Cry for Self-Help
Published in Hardcover by Berkley Pub Group (April, 1997)
Authors: Jaqueline Girdner and Jacqueline Girdner
Average review score:

a delicious mystery cozy that will add to the author's fame
In Marin County, California Kate Jasper was attending a scuba diver wedding when human potential guru Sam Skyler, takes an unwanted, but clearly assisted dive off the edge of a cliff. Kate decides to investigate the murder of the rich head of the Skyler Institute for Essential Manifestation. Wayne Caruso, who wants to marry Kate, reluctantly helps his beloved because he wants to protect her from a killer and even more so, from herself. ..... As the couple digs into Sam's past, they run the gauntlet of New Age personas. They also learn that the victim has a problem filled history. However, the worst problem comes from Sam's fanatic followers who want Kate and Wayne to drop the case. The threat do not stop fearless Kate from continuing to investigate. The number of suspects with motives seems overwhelming, but that does not stop Kate from investigating. Wayne's incessant pleading for her to quit fails to stop Kate doing what she believes is her job. Only one thing could ever stop Kate from completing her investigation: a final solution that could only lead either to her death (not a remote possibility when kate is on the job), or identifying and apprehending the killer. ...... The eighth entry in the Kate Jasper series is humorous and charming as it highlights various eccentric characters living in Northern California. Kate is an interesting amateur sleuth and the story line is fun to read. However, fans of the dead-serious who-done-it sub-genre will not enjoy this novel. This book is intended for those readers who enjoy a quirky assortment of secondary characters tied together through a who-done-it that emphasizes the New Age renaissance. Harriet Klausner

Defying Gravity
Published in Paperback by Coteau Books (November, 2000)
Author: Jennifer Webber
Average review score:

Wonderful spiritual journey across Canada
I enjoyed the Canadian setting for this story. Miranda Tyler is dumped be her fiancee while on holiday in Jasper National Park. Turner leaves Miranda on the top of the mountain, and she tries to convince herself he has just stepped to the washroom. He does not come back, which leads Miranda on a journey to find herself.

Miranda meets Indrin, a kind young man who decides to join Miranda on her camping trip heading to Vancouver. They meet some interesting folks along the way, thanks to Indrin's future plan to become a priest. The couple stop at a Catholic church and meet Father Lowry, where Miranda's agnostic opinons collide with the Catholic teachings.

Miranda is quite affected by the outlook of her young companion, and Indrin enjoys studying Miranda's sarcasm and quick wit. Miranda uses these skills to protect herself from grief and sadness.

The author's writing style was effective, and I really enjoyed the Canadian references and setting. The ending was appropriate, and I feel Miranda found what she was looking for on her quest. A wonderful story, worthy of 5 stars. I look forward to future writings by Webber.

Henry VIII
Published in Unknown Binding by Constable ()
Author: Jasper Godwin Ridley
Average review score:

Brilliant
Ridley is brilliant as ever. In his masterly style, he portrays both historic detail and periodic insight in such manner that the reader is captivated from the first page onwards. The ongoing battle with Lady Antonia Frazer's biography is a delight (especially when historical inaccuracies in her biography are condemned to footnotes). A book one cannot put down for a single moment.
